Why being a freelance graphic designer beats employmentFor much of the past century, the Era of Big Work — the 40-hour workweek and its employer-provided benefits — were the foundation of our economy. That was then.
Now, freelancing is the new normal. And a new study released yesterday from the U.K. Government Accountability Office shows what we’ve been saying for years. The report, Contingent Workforce: Size, Characteristics, Earnings, and Benefits, details a number of interesting findings. Here are a few that stood out:
What does all this mean? First, as the stability of traditional work wanes, so does its appeal. Leaving the rat race behind is incredibly liberating 88% of our members say they'd never go back to full-time work. They value their time, and the work-life balance it affords. Second, though freelancers come from tremendously varied socioeconomic backgrounds, they’re vulnerable in similar ways. Migrant day laborers, freelance graphic artists, Uber drivers, and self-employed CPAs, all experience up-and-down income, double taxation, no benefits, no safety net, and a government and culture that still doesn’t understand them or the way they work. The silver lining here is that common challenges can promote cohesion—and eventually, common strength. That’s why Freelancers Union is bringing independent workers together to build smarter solutions to health care, retirement, wage security, and other broken systems. It also explains why more labor unions, social purpose companies, and nonprofit organizations should be empowered and encouraged to do the same. The data is clear: freelancing is the future of work. And we need a new economic infrastructure that supports the way that 53 million people are now working.

Typography in design, a silent salesman for your Dorset BusinessWhen designing a sign or logo for your business, there is one word that is going to play a huge role in your business brands success: typography. Typography refers to the style, composition and appearance of printed words. It is not hard to see, as to see why Typography is so important, but why should us as designers in Dorset, pay so much attention to it? What’s wrong with a bit of bold text and be done with it? Well as we're about to explain, if you look at the robust history of typography you begin to realise that there’s far more to typography than you might think. A lot of businesses make the wrong assumption that, no matter what logo, font and branding they choose, people will use their business because their product on offer is better than allof their competitors and no one can provide their service quite like they can... Well, this isn't entirely true. Although a genuinely appealing product or service goes a long way in retaining your customers, it's not your product or services that ATTRACT your customers and client in the first place. The sad truth is that people don’t have time to try each local business one-by-one to find out whether what they offer is better than the rest. Instead, they need to make snap, impulse decisions based on, YEP, you guessed it... your branding and the visual stimuli that the typography used within the graphic design process accumulates to. Remember, no matter what the medium, the first thing your potential clients and customers will see when they come across your business is the brand and signage. As a result, signs are more important than many business owners realise. Whatever logo or typography you use then, is going to be taking center stage, making the opportunity to optimise it one not be missed. How we use typography to your advantageWe've done research into certain colours, cultural influences, words and typefaces that have various different generalisations and perceptions amongst a wide range of potential clients and customers, therefore we can accurately assess your businesses brand ideas and goals to professionally portray the right image for your business, right from the beginning of your venture.
We want your business to display it's products and services in the best way possible. While this isn’t all down to just the typography, it does play a big part, so here are some examples of how we can use typography to your advantage:

Because of this their hourly and daily rates are often far less and their quality of work is better because they can afford to dedicate more time to individual projects as opposed to having to split their time between multiple projects at once.
Freelance graphic designers are far more flexible than graphic design agencies in Dorset. They work at a time which suits them and as so can often work outside of the 9-5 routine to get a project completed faster than a graphic design agency can. Freelance graphic designers often take pride in their skills and aren't a number in a long chain of command that you find at larger graphic design agencies and their work is an extension of their body, the work they produce for you will be valuable to them as it will most likely for a part of their portfolio, which will lead to referrals and more work. Freelance graphic designers don't get the comfort of a monthly income, if they don't have any projects to complete they don't have any income.
